To compute for the proper width of the chandelier, simply add the width and length of your room. Use the sum, based on inches, as your starting point. For example, you room measures 14 feet x 16 feet, it is advisable to look for a 30" wide chandelier.
If your room is full of appliances, you could choose to go down in size. On the other hand, if your room has open spaces, you could go up in sizes.
If you wish to hang the chandelier into a two-story foyer, be aware that the higher the chandelier's placement, the smaller it will look. Consider going farther than what the formula suggests. However, when the room has a low ceiling, you should use smaller measurements than the formula recommends.
The lights you will purchase would depend on the size of your room. The average socket could carry a maximum of 60 watts. However, 40 watts is enough to flatter the entire chandelier. If you have a small room, six to eight lights are enough to sparkle up the area. If you have a larger room, it may require at least eight to ten lights. It is recommended, regardless of the number of candles used, to buy a dimmer.
